On April 29th, with the support of the U.S. Embassy Baku and American Councils for International Education, EducationUSA Azerbaijan organized the Alumni Fair, which took place at the Baku American Center. The Fair aimed to provide interested Azerbaijanis with information and insight into the U.S. education system. During the fair, 23 alumni of U.S. degree programs presented information about their U.S. alma-maters to interested students. In fact, Noah Drezner, the Associate Professor of Higher Education from Columbia University, attended the Alumni Fair to represent the Teacher College of Columbia University. It was a great chance for prospective students to talk directly to alumni and receive more detailed information on university degree programs, application procedures, scholarships, student life, and cultural adaptation in the U.S. Participants asked about deadlines, admission requirements, and scholarship opportunities.
The Fair organizers prepared a scavenger hunt game, which consisted of having student teams ask the university representatives specific questions from a list. During the fair, EducationUSA volunteers worked to create 5 teams for the scavenger hunt and managed the team members’ work. The first and second place teams were announced at the end of the Fair.
The Alumni Fair was promoted through the EducationUSA Azerbaijan, U.S Embassy Baku, and Baku American Center Facebook pages. In total, the posts were shared 52 times, reached 26.395 people, and liked by 2525.
The Alumni Fair was broadcast on Facebook live twice, specifically on the EducationUSA Azerbaijan and Baku American Center pages. In total, 1,862 people were reached and 845 people watched the Fair.
We welcome you to participate in the EducationUSA “Alumni Fair” to learn more about prestigious U.S. Universities directly from the Alumni and Embassy staff. A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is an online course designed for wide participation and open access via the internet. MOOCs are good resources for distance education. Many US universities provide MOOCs to attract students to their university and makes education possible for everyone around the world. Some MOOCs provide official certificates, some can be used for college credit, some are for a fee, and there are many MOOCs that are free of charge.
Due to many requests from students interested in distance education, EducationUSA Azerbaijan facilitated a MOOC provided by the University of Pennsylvania – “Applying to US Universities” at US-Azerbaijan Education Center. This MOOC gave an opportunity to Azerbaijani students to experience the American education system. This 5 week long MOOC included various videos where Erick Hyde, the University Connections Counseling Specialist, talked about the admission and evaluation process, academic qualifications, how to research US universities, understanding deadlines, application forms and other required documents. Each session was followed by a discussion and the EducationUSA Adviser shared practical experience about the application process. Additionally, information on scholarships that are available for Azerbaijani students was also provided. This MOOC has helped students interested in studying in the US, decide which university is right for them.
