FLEX Alumni

FLEX Alumni are the students who studied one exchange year in USA. The Alumni of the FLEX program organize many activities back in Azerbaijan. One of the most famous activities of FLEX Alumni are free conversation clubs, that are led by the alumni themselves, different charity projects, community service projects etc.

Ramadan Donation Project (2010-2011)

The project started with the beggining of the Holy month of Ramadan. During the holiday, FLEX alumni were raising money for Orphanage # 7 in Surakhani to paint the walls of the children’s rooms. FLEX alumni successfully raised $1,017 USD for this project. The first trip to the orphanage was on September 26th when FLEXers  went there and spent nearly an entire day painting two girls’ rooms pink.

There are 7 rooms in total : 2 girls’ and 5 boys’, plus the orphanage is in need of some essential items (e.g. lamps, shelves) for children.

Coca Cola Company has been very supportive of this project and has sent company products to the orphanage. Also, Park Bulvar helped a lot by giving FLEX Alumni the chance to hold a fund-raising event there.

The second trip to Surakhani took place on October 3rd . Alumni were able to finish the rennovations in the orphanage: 3 more rooms painted.

Thanks to their enthusiasm and willingness to help now the kids’ rooms look a lot nicer. Conversation Clubs

Hello all!

The Conversation Club season at the American Councils has started. Conversation Club is a project of FLEX Alumni that is free of charge to anybody who would like to improve their knowledge of English language as well as their speaking skills. This year Conversation Clubs will be led by 8 FLEX alumni: Dinara Aliyeva ’09, Kenan Alisoy ’09, Leyla Salakhova ’07, Vugar Qarayev ’08, Ulvi Hasanli ’06, Raisa Alakbarova ’09, Zinyet Asadova ’10 and Nana Taghiyeva ’10.

English Teaching Project for Disabled Youth

Kamran Aliyev ’04 has initiated a project together with the AzETA (Azerbaijan English Teachers Association), Shenay Huseynova ’08 and Fahriya Guliyeva ’06, to teach English for 20 disabled youth ages 18 to 35. The classes are twice a week: Wednesday and Saturday. From its initiation, the project  was supported by the FLEX Alumni Coordinator and, after several discussions with the present Coordinator, Kamran decided to apply for  support from the former FLEX Recruitment Assistant, Chimnaz Aliyeva (who is an active member if the society and is working together with Women’s Bar Association Azerbaijan). Kamran is doing a great job teaching the disabled. As Kamran reported, the project is going great and disabled youth are feeling that someone cares about their situation in this society.
